It looks like Marvel is assembling a good team! After casting the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord, Marvel is now in negotiations to cast Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa to play Drax the Destroyer. This role should compliment Momoa’s previous role as Conan the Barbarian, in the 2011 movie of the same name.

According to Latino-Review.com, Marvel was so impressed by Momoa’s screen test that they offered him the role. Marvel had also auditioned Isaiah Mustafa (The Old Spice Guy), Brian Patrick Wade (The Guardian), and former WWE Superstar Dave Bautista (The Man With the Iron Fists) to play the vengeance-seeking comic book character. Momoa would join actor Chris Pratt in Guardians of the Galaxy, who was cast a few weeks ago as the group’s leader, Star-Lord/Peter Quill.

Drax the Destroyer was once Arthur Douglas, a human whose family was attacked and killed by the super-villain Thanos. The being known as Kronos took Douglas’ soul and placed it in a new body. Kronos created Drax the Destroyer to defeat and kill his grandson, Thanos. Drax’s superpowers include enhanced strength and resilience, flight, and the ability to project energy blasts. According to James Gunn, Arthur Douglas’ rebirth as Drax the Destroyer will be modified and updated for the feature film.

Jason Momoa’s possible casting only leaves three more members of the Guardians of the Galaxy yet to be cast. Gina Carano (Haywire), Olivia Wilde (Cowboys & Aliens), and Adrianne Palicki (G.I. Joe Retaliation) are rumored to be up for the role of Gamora, “the deadliest woman in the whole galaxy,” while Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey are rumored to play either Rocket Raccoon or the treelike alien Groot.

Principal photography begins on Guardians of the Galaxy this summer for its scheduled August 1, 2014 release date.
